Talents and Faith

Talents and Faith

I’m so thankful to share this post with you. A post written by my mother, Lori. Hope you enjoy!

“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.  He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. ~Matthew 25:14-17  (ESV)

Our Porkie and Pete journey began with a gift from God. This gift was a series of stories laid on our hearts. The stories feature two friends, a porcupine and a moose, who yearn to share God’s love with others.

Learning what to do with the gift entrusted to us has been a challenge. What were we supposed to do with these stories? How were we supposed to share them with others? Did we have the talent and the drive to pull this off?

Well, we tried to make a go of these stories. In fact, we tried for years and then, one day, we stopped trying. The task seemed insurmountable.

A year and a half ago, the stories were buried in our homes under clutter (and in a piano bench). Then, God nudged us.  Was that it? Was that the best we could do with His precious gift?

Well, as it turns out, it wasn’t.

This past year, realizing we couldn’t do this on our own, we:

  • Leaned on God as we did what we thought impossible
  • Prayed (continually) for guidance and wisdom
  • Rejoiced with God as we hurdled over each roadblock
  • Believed we could do this, after all, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” ~Philippians 4:13

The conclusion of the first leg of our journey is almost here. We pray that we have been faithful to the gift we have been given.

“His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’”~Matthew 25:23 (ESV)
